Mathematics in the Science Faculty

Undenominated and Denominated Degrees

The majority of students who enter the Science Faculty do so via the CAO code GY301 (Science), and are permitted to choose from a range of subjects in first and second year. This is known as the undenominated degree in the Science Faculty. For example a student might take Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, Physics and Chemistry in the first year, Mathematics, Mathematical Physics and Physics in second year, Mathematics with another subject in third year and then Mathematics only in the final year of the Honours B.Sc. degree in Mathematics.

Students who enter the Science Faculty via the CAO code GY306 (Computing Studies) or CAO code GY309 (Financial Mathematics) do not have this wide choice of subjects, but have the advantage of entering directly into a specific or denominated honours degree programme. They may however, with the permission of Faculty, be allowed to transfer into other degree programmes provided that in their first and second years they fulfil Faculty requirements for proceeding to a B.Sc. programme in other departments.

Undenominated Degree Programmes

The general degree is of three years duration and is designed to give a student a broad knowledge across several areas. At the more specialized honours degree level a student may proceed to either :
The three year honours degree in Mathematical Science (Mathematics and Mathematical Physics).
or
The four year honours degree in the subject Mathematics.

Denominated Degree Programmes

Denominated Degree Programmes in Computing Studies leading to B.Sc. degree in Mathematical Science/Computing. Students enter directly into this programmes via CAO course code GY306 (Computing Studies). The Mathematical Science/Computing degree is a four year honours degree programme in which, from the second year onwards, students are allowed to choose courses from a large number available in the Mathematical Science and Computing areas. While the programme is of four years duration, students may be awarded a B.Sc. general degree at the end of three years.

The degree in Financial Mathematics commenced in 1998 and was developed in response to perceived needs and indeed in response to the fact that many Mathematics graduates go directly upon graduation into the Financial Services sector. This new programme takes account of new developments such as Option pricing, Financial Derivatives, Neural networks, which are used more and more in the Financial Services sector but require a highly numerate background.
