Mathematics at National University of Ireland, Galway

Postgraduate Degrees

The Department of Mathematics offer courses and research supervision leading to the degrees of M.Sc./M.A. and Ph.D. for suitably qualified graduates. A Masters degree requires one year of fulltime study of prescribed courses and a minor thesis; candidates should normally have a first or second class honours degree in Mathematics. Three years of fulltime study are necessary for a Ph.D. degree.

The Higher Diploma in Applied Science (Mathematics) is aimed at students with a good general degree in Mathematics. It is intended to provide a qualification in some of the more applicable mathematical disciplines.

The principal research interests within the Department are related to aspects of algebra (especially group theory), statistics, analysis, operator, differential and integral equations, topology and differential geometry. The computational aspects of these research areas are emphasized. Applications to Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Software Development form an integral part of much of this research work.
