Mathematics at National University of Ireland, Galway

Introduction

Mathematics is one of the oldest intellectual disciplines. The study of Mathematics, central to Science, Engineering, Economics, Business Studies, Philosophy and many other disciplines, has been regarded as an important part of the culture of most civilizations throughout history. The computer revolution would not have been possible without the efforts of mathematicians; the enormous implications for telecommunications, information technology, economics and other sciences have yet to be fully realized.

Most of Mathematics which now exists has been created this century. In recent years a number of problems which have resisted the efforts of mathematicians for hundreds of years have been solved; but new problems take their place, and whole new branches of Mathematics arise with the development of computers and the spread of mathematical methods to the newer sciences.
