Mathematics at National University of Ireland, Galway

Honours or General?

Due to a number of circumstances, not every potentially good student of Mathematics would necessarily have taken the subject to honours level at Leaving Certificate. It is the innate ability of the student, more than previous experience, that will determine whether he or she has the ability to proceed to an honours degree. A student who has passed first year honours or who has performed exceptionally well in first year general may proceed into second year honours. In first year the general course in Mathematics is a subset of the honours courses so transition from honours to general is possible at any time during the year.

In the Arts Faculty the final decision to proceed to an honours degree is made at the end of first year.

In the Science Faculty the final decision to proceed to an honours degree is made at the end of second year. A student must obtain honours stardard (or nearly honours standard) in the second year examination in order to proceed to an honours degree.

In the Denominated Degree in Mathematical Science/Computing, students must obtain an average of 50% in the two core subjects (Mathematical Science and Computing) and pass clearly in all subjects, in order to proceed into 3rd year and 4th year honours.
