Masters In Mathematics Programme


This is a one year programme. Candidates attend lectures in four courses in each semester and sit a written examination in addition to submitting a minor dissertation. The courses offered vary from year to year; they will usually be drawn from the following areas:

  • Functional Analysis
  • Theory of Relativity
  • Operator Theory
  • C* Algebras
  • Quantum Field Theory
  • Geometry
  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Algebra
  • Fluid Dynamics
  • Statistics
  • Elasticity
  • Group Theory
  • Continuum Mechanics
  • Computer Algebra
The usual entry requirement for admission to these courses is an Honours Primary Degree in which Honours Mathematics or Mathematical Physics is a major component and in which the level attained in Mathematics or Mathematical Physics is at least Second Class Honours.

The fee for the course for a European Union student was £1,600 in the 1998/1999 session. The fee for the 1999/2000 session has yet to be determined by the Governing Body. A higher rate of fee is payable by students whose home residence is, as defined in the College regulation, outside the EU; details available on request.

The general form of application for admission as a postgraduate student should be filled, with item 10(a) ["Proposed Degree"] returned as "M.A. (Mode B) in Mathematics", or M.A. (Mode B) in Mathematical Science or "M.Sc. (Mode II) in Mathematical Science". An application fee of £20 should be included, and the completed form sent to: Postgraduate Admissions Office, National University of Ireland, Galway.
