MATHEMATICS RESEARCH AREAS

Statistics Group Research Profile.

The Statistics Group is headed up by Professor John Hinde. He has worked for over twenty years in various aspects of statistical modelling. He is the author of applied and theoretical papers in the area, co-author of a book on applied modelling, has taught courses on statistical modelling in many different countries, and contributed to software development. He has been actively involved in the European statistical modelling scene and is one of the founding editors of the recently established journal Statistical Modelling.

The research interests of the Statistics Group include both the development and application of theoretical and applied statistical methods, with much of this work involving collaboration with other departments at NUIG and with other Universities across the world.

NameResearch Interests
John HindeModels for discrete data with applications in biometry; generalized linear models; overdispersion, random effects and mixture models; statistical computing; likelihood inference; analysis of microarray data.
Jerome N. SheahanInterests include robustness in regression, time series and multivariate models (especially asymptotic behaviour of estimators), and applied probability problems.
John NewellApplications in medicine, biology and sports science; survival analysis (including bivariate survival problems); statistical computing and computational inference; Functional Data Analysis.
Paul WilsonTruncated and modified discrete distributions, including modelling and parameter estimation for data from such distributions. Mathematical and statistical education.
Emma HolianInterests initially in Actuarial studies in particular statistical modelling in life insurance and progressed to Bioinformatics, current research entails statistical analysis of variation in microarray experiments in conjunction with the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science at NUIG.
